Although my examples will have to do with pageantry, these tips are relevant to all aspects of life. Often we either overwhelm or underwhelm ourselves with unrealistic expectations. These expectations could be with achieving a certain pageant title or even applying for schools and jobs. This is the way I look at things and feel free to disagree or offer your own techniques.
When setting a goal I start with a list. At the top of that lift I write the goal in BIG BOLD LETTERS! Underneath I make three columns. They are labeled: What is expected of me, things I possess, and things I need to work on. All of these columns put the goal into perspective for me.
When applying for Graduate school I made one of these lists. When I wrote out everything I had accomplished and what was expected of me, I was able to conceptualize what I needed to do. Now only three things remain on that list, and that is the only things separating me from earning that degree.
The only limits we have, are the ones we put on ourselves. The perfect example of this is worrying about your competition during a pageant week/weekend. So-and-so is here and she won this lately. She is good. Blah blah blah. I hear this ALLLLLLL the time. By giving your attention to this other competitor and not focusing on yourself, you are allowing this other girl to beat you and accomplish YOUR dream! The only way you can compete to the best of your ability is to worry about yourself, not who has the better gown or competition wardrobe.
Also do your research. When you apply for a job you should always research the company. It is important to find out what ideals the company finds important. What do they expect of an employee...? Think about it, pageantry is essentially the same thing. You are applying for a job, whether you realize it or not. You should act accordingly. Know the pageant mission statement, know what they expect of their queens, and know how to present yourself to the best of your ability.
One thing I will tell you, is at first you don't succeed, TRY TRY TRY again. If a goal can not be reached, remember that through the process you have improved while on your journey.
This will not be the last blog post on this topic, but I think it will work for a first :)
